Social Practice Project:
“I’m like you. I’m like me. I am a Mosaic of everyone i’ve ever loved”
My idea for my final sculpture project was to create a collaborative piece involving the idea that the person we are is made up of bits of others. The ways we act, the mannerisms we have, phrases we say, etc. are all taken from those we’ve cared about. Just as a mosaic is made of different pieces of glass so too are we composed of others.
•I drink coffee because of my dad
• I laugh the way I do because of my speech coach/drama director in high-school.
• i’m studying to be an art therapist in part because my brother likes psychology.
• I like to thrift because my friend becca took me three years ago.
• i say “now you’re cooking with crisco” because of my best friend’s family
I wanted to engage others in this, so if they so chose they could write their own versions of this prompt on a tile and stick it on the window creating new mosaic.
People are wired for connection and for noticing things, it’s just lovely seeing how small interactions so deeply influence the person we are today. i wouldn’t be who i am today without the influence of my parents, but also my second-grade teacher, and a classmate from my ASL course last year.
take time to notice and reflect.
because you’re like you. you’re like me.
